Mid Century Floating Sofa Before & After

You might remember I picked up this, rather my husband, picked up this mid century floating sofa last year.  We loved the look but really hated the 80's-ish covers of denim blue with yellow piping. Eck!

Well, it took a loooooong time to get around to it, but I finally dragged myself Los Angeles' fabric district and purchased a soft turquoise blue knubby upholstery. I found someone on Craigslist who recovered it for $60.  I purchased foam to make a back rest in lieu of all pillows.  I made the small Ikat throw pillows with fabric I purchased downtown as well. (I should do a whole post on the fabrics I saw!  Wowza! I was in fabric heaven.)

Anyway, what do you think?

Before

After

I'm still debating whether or not I should keep the foam backrest or make 2  more throw pillows for the back, like the original.  Your opinion?

Huge difference with the new fabric! Looks great! This may have had wedge shaped back cushions originally. You'd likely have to have them cut by a pro, but the upholstery job seems pretty reasonable.

Keep the backrest and the pillows, they look nice together. I'd even add a couple more pillows in another pattern to add even more interest to your nice floating sofa!

Dang girl! Looks great, I'd leave it as is. We have no upholstery people here in my town, so I pass up lots of great pieces , I'm jealous! :)

MUCH BETTER than the "cub scout color palette" before! I think the back rest matches perfectly, like it was always meant to be.

Great blog! Love the new look of your sofa, it looks very similar to my two norwegian Ekornes Combina from the 60s, have a look here: http://stuffthatmakesmyheartbeatfaster.blogspot.no/2012/08/ekornes-combina-daybeds.html
I'd definitely keep the foam backrest:-)

I like the backrest and think it looks pretty authentic. But you could throw a few more pillows on it for sure. Nice job!

Lovely before and after sofa transformation! Adding two more pillows is a good idea. Do share more pictures once everything is complete.
