Wall Unit Refinished and In It's Place - My Home.

To no ones surprise I'm sure, the wall unit has found it's new home in my dining area.  How could it not? It's such a beautiful and rare piece.   I had a Kroehler china cabinet there before, which I loved, but this new piece blew it out of the water.  It's so sleek and I love the airy-ness (did I just make up that word?)

My husband gets all the credit for this.  He refinished it and I "supervised". I did some of the staining just so I could have a part in it, but really it's all him.  Good job honey!

Check out the before......

There was a tag inside one of the drawers at some point. Here is what's left.  Anyone have any idea??
Looks like an Sa..g....no idea!

and here is what I had in this space before. Now for sale:

Do you like the new wall unit better than the china cabinet?

I love these things so much! That is such a sleek wall unit and the refinish looks to have turned out perfect.

The wall unit is unbelievable! The before and after pics just blow me away. You and hubby did a fantastic job. It's soooooo beautiful.

I have to say, though, that the china cabinet is really hot too. I'd probably be greedy and try to figure out a way to keep them both. There's no way to use the new piece in another room?

Wow, what a great refinishing job! That label looks like it spells Saginaw. I did a little web surfing and there was a Saginaw furniture company operating into the 1960s. Can you provide some details on how your husband finished the wood, and what finishing products he used? I like both pieces of furniture, but the refinished one sure looks good.

Yep, this little cabinet is amazing!
Sometimes the only way to really describe something is to make up new words :)

Dana, we think alike! I did think of ways to keep the china cabinet too but there really is no space for it anywhere. I keep saying I need a bigger house! ;)

Hey Uncle Atom, thanks! It does look like Saginaw.

The old finish was stripped off with stainless steel wool and lacquer remover. Then it was sanded down. We put a coat of pre-stain which helps the stain to absorb better, then 2 coats of one of my favorite color stains "Gun Stock". Lastly, a coat of satin polyurethane.

From what I can gather, Saginaw Furniture Shops (Saginaw, MI) was in operation from about 1900-1960. Apparently, their furniture is becoming fairly collectible, so you've scored again! Good job!

That's so awesome. We did a quick search and found the same unit sold for around $500. Not bad considering we paid....wait for it...... $40.

I found a similar one that sold a few years ago for $740, and it only had a couple of doors on the bottom, so I'd guess that yours was more expensive when it was first produced. See what your $40 bought? Way to go!

So gorgeous! I'm a gunstock lover too...I always have a can of it laying around just in case a random piece of wood needs to be stained!

It would be so awesome if you could keep both. Since you can't, I think you made the right decision in keeping the wall unit. It's beautiful!

I love it! I so wanted to buy one like that on ebay but I couldn't justify the price. $40 is crazy! Your china cabinet was great too, but the new piece is killer. Congrats!
