Mid Century Modern Starburst Lamp

What's a very pregnant girl to do but lay around (uncomfortable) and wait for baby to come?  Oh yes, shop for lamps.  Sure, why not feed my lamp addiction?

Well, I picked up this beauty locally on Ebay with plans to put it in my shop. Buuuuuut, yep you guessed it; I got it home and could not part with it.  I refinished the wood and scrubbed the brass.    Isn't it pretty? I just love it.  It had to go front and center on my Brasilia piece in the entry way.

I scored this wall hanging lamp on Etsy a couple of months back. I'd been looking for a wall mounted mid century light for some time.  They are few and far between and typically very expensive. This was a great score!

aaaaand, I picked this one up from Etsy to replace the sort of beat up lamp I had on my side table.  Listen to me justify the lamp purchases.... ha ha

and, yep, still going, I actually picked up another lamp from Ebay but I don't know if I'm keeping it.  It was purchased just before I found the above lamp on Etsy, which I like much better.

Hey, told you I had a lamp addiction!

Happy New Year.

Saturday Estate Sales.

I plan to go sailing this Saturday.  Here are a couple of estate sales that look very promising.  Problem is, I'd have to be in line at the crack of dawn to get the good stuff. That's just not happening at almost 6 months pregnant!  I'll let you know what happens.  Man, I'd love to nab those laurel style lamps.

#2 Old Hollywood Memorabilia at the Hollywood Castle:

This one might be fun to go to just to tour the house.

Have a wonderful long weekend!

The Wall Sconce that Started a Frenzy

I came across this incredible Walnut Candle Sconce on A Design Enthusiast blog and fell in love.  Great find Sudha!  It got my heart racing and started a frenzy. I must have my own mid century/danish modern/atomic age candle wall sconce!  Great, a new obsession!

The wall sconce that started the madness:

Mid Century Cats.

Is it just me or did we see a lot of cats in art and figure in the mid century? What was the obsession with cats?  Don't get me wrong, I love them, I just wonder why some things caught on in the 60's.

Check out this mid century modern kitty (or other animal?) I brought home a couple of weeks ago.  I found it at Goodwill for $2.99.  I had to keep it.... of course right?  It has bizarre shell eyes that I think must have been added later.  I'd love to pluck them off but fear damaging the wood if I do.  I love its long neck.

Etsy Front Page!

My shop has made it to the front page twice this month.  If you are an Etsy seller you know that making front page is a big deal and very exciting!

Check out my mid century chair and vintage magnifying glass that graced the "cover":

The Mother Ship Has Landed. Danish Modern Lamps.

It arrived!  The mother ship has landed!  It looks very atomic and space age right?  It's a Danish mid century lamp with teak wood legs, brass hardware and a frosted white glass shade.

This is the lamp I mentioned in an earlier post that I ordered from Ebay to go in the bedroom.  Well, before it arrived I found a mushroom lamp at Salvation Army that is now on my bedside table, so this had to find a new home.  It was larger than expected but I absolutely love it.  I've got it in the den for now but we'll see where it ends up.

I just love lamps. I probably have too many in my home but oh well.  No, you can't have too many.

Here are some other super cool Danish lamps available on Ebay and Etsy:

Danish Modern Hanging Lamp $200 at Bloodline NYC

Mid Century Danish Modern Teak Eames Era Lamp $350 from AS Village Treasures

Danish Modern Teak Hanging Lamp Poulsen era bid at $73.54 from Zeppelin36

Danish Modern Eames Era Laverne Table Lamp $325 from Modern and Objects

Wow, they just don't make them like this anymore.  I'm always saying that.  I love the mid century!

Vintage GE Flip Alarm Clock

My new, err old, new alarm clock arrived today.  Don't you love getting packages in the mail?

I won this retro beauty on Ebay for $8.09.  I love the minimalist look of it and of course, the flipping numbers.   It's a nice pale beige color, perfect for my yet-to-be-decided color of the bedroom.

It has a spinning second hand on the right hand side and the alarm time on the left wheel.   I've tested the alarm function and boy does it work.  My husband is "protesting" it's use due to the horrid buzzing sound it emits.  Well, at least now maybe I will get up when the alarm goes off.  Isn't that an alarm's purpose?   In the past I'd roll over and turn the music alarm off in a half-sleep state.  Yeah, that's effective!   So now we're cool and we'll get up on time.

Here are some other flips on Ebay currently:

VTG 60's CAPRI FLIP/ALARM CLOCK EAMES ERA MINTY $29.99

General Electric Flip Alarm Clock Lighted Dial $5.99

VINTAGE MONTGOMERY WARDS FLIP/DRUM ALARM CLOCK TESTED $14.95

Vintage FLIP alarm Clock sankyo digital model 412 b14 $4.99

.................and some available at Etsy:

Vintage Working General Electric Flip Clock $32.00

Vintage Olive Green Sunbeam Electronic Flip Alarm Clock Geekery $18.00

Seth Thomas Vintage Speed Read Clock E 037 $65.00

What wakes you up in the morning?

Plycraft Beam of Sunshine on my Rainy Day

It's a rainy day in Los Angeles. Wish I was sitting in this chair with a nice cup of tea.
I suppose it's good though, after a week-long triple digit heatwave and we need the rain around here. Just a little disappointing to leave the sunshine to go to Seattle for a long weekend, and return to rain. Oh well!

While waiting on the sun to return to my life, this beam of light, aka an original plycraft lounge chair, sent me a much needed jolt! The rain makes you sleepy right?

Check out this motherlode of a set (found on Craigslist Los Angeles): An original leather Plycraft Mr. Chair and ottoman by George Mulhauser (as stated).
It has loving been restored with crisp white leather upholstery. G.O.R.G.E.O.U.S! And the boomerang coffee table is gorgeous too! What a set!
White would never last around my house though. I lovingly share it with a messy, ehem, not-as-neat-as-I-would-like husband, and 3 cats who enjoy 60's furniture too - yeah, like they have any idea they are sitting on original mid century pieces!

And for a laugh....here's one of my cats, Birdie, fast asleep on a Danish lounge chair.

A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. Brasilia Headboard and Lamps

If you are a Brasilia fanatic like me, or if you simply love the mid century design, you must check out the blog Mr. Modtomic. His finds at local flea markets, shops, Craigslist, etc. will make any MCM lover drool and wish they could be his shopping partner in crime.

Ok, first...he has the most amazing Brasilia headboard I have ever seen! I can only hope to find a headboard for my own bed (the search has been long and tedious) that is even a fraction as fabulous as this one. I mean, look at those lines!

Now on to the lamps...if you are over the shock of the headboard yet. The LAMPS: If you look at them too long your eyes will burn; yes, like the sun. They are that incredible. If you're a Brasilia lover than you get what I'm saying.

To me, I'm looking at art when I see the Brasilia lines. I've said it time and time again, they just don't make them like this anymore. The design is striking yet simple and so pleasing to the eye in an overt yet simultaneously subconscious way. Strange I know, but that's how I feel. I will forever love and covet the Brasilia design.

So, it's confirmed; the mid west is a gold-mine for mid century finds. I'm a mid west girl by birth, born in Kansas City Missouri, and I'm feeling a deep desire to get a one-way ticket to St. Louis or KC, rent a truck and scour the land for mid century modern, then drive....yes drive back to Los Angeles, California with my truck load!

Check out my Etsy Treasury featuring some of my favorite minimal Danish style pieces.
Wish I could buy them all!

I just love how effortlessly beautiful Danish modern and Mid Century design is.
How can something so simple be so stunning, inviting and artistic at the same time?
