Lost Art. Mid Century Phones and Phone Tables.

As technology advances we see iconic pieces lost to new innovation.  Such is true with telephones. I can't tell you how many people I know that no longer have a home phone, myself included.   Well, technically I don't.  I DO have old phones in my house, because I love the way old phones look, but they aren't plugged in to a land line.

Mine are just decor, but aren't they great?

this one is a repro but I'm always looking for the real thing....

And how about old phone tables aka gossip benches?  Imagine tables designed just to hold the telephone and phone book?  It makes sense when you think back when people would actually sit down and make a phone call to catch up with friends or family. It was an event, an appointment.  It's not like today when we are driving and talking, shopping and talking,  riding a bike and talking (yes, I've actually seen this)!

How fabulous are these?  Uh oh, I think I want one.

Sold on Ebay.

How about these awesome phones?

Etsy  I had this exact phone in the 80's!

Funny story, one night we had some friends over.  3 kids of our friends were gathered around my black rotary phone playing with it.   One said to her Dad "Daddy, what is this"?  She had no idea what it was.  Wow.  It makes sense but it was so weird to think that she (they) really had no clue that it was a telephone!

I love old phones and gossip benches! We just got a cute bench for the store, but I need to recover the seat. You found some really cute pictures. I especially love the little pie-wedge one.

Such pretty pieces you have! And the images you put together are adorable, too. When I was a teenager, I decorated my room in 70's style, with lots of gold and oranges, and my awesome mom helped me find awesome vintage things like a flower power bed sheet and an orange shag rug. One of my favorite things was my vintage phone, in an avocado-green/yellow color. I loved dialing on the rotary face, and playing with the cord while chatting on it. I miss it now!
And as for little ones not knowing what a phone is, it's totally true. We have one of those Fisher Price pull toys that look like old rotary phones, and the kids I nanny for kept calling it a "scooter." Sigh.

I no longer have a land line either but kind of want to get one so I can use my vintage phones (and have an excuse to get a telephone table!). I love all your vintage phones, it's disturbing to think the new generation won't know what 'real' phones are like.

I desperately want a gossip bench, but I've only seen one while out thrifting-and it was overpriced and not that great. Now I know I need to hold out and wait for something as fabulous as these.

Those all look so sweet! I want one of those in my hall way with a crazy mid century phone sitting on it too!
